EVENT / BERLIN THE ART OF ENJOYING GALLERY WEEKEND: CEE CEE’S TOP PICKS As you know, this weekend is Gallery Weekend, and in case you are overwhelmed by the number of things on offer, we’ve gathered together a selection of our best recommendations. First, wander the works of Ghada Amer at the Kewening Gallery – the Egyptian-born artist is famous for her diverse works in multiple mediums, such as liquified clay and ceramics, which explore questions of power, gender, and sexual expression. For a double dose of culture, the Bernheimer Contemporary is hosting two exhibitions called “Spielraum”, and “What Would I Die For”. The first is the solo project of Daniele Sigalot, housing his huge and iconic sculptures, whilst the second is formed of five artists, each representing contemporary societal sacrifice – from reproductions of luxury items to Gosia Warrink’s take on modern femininity with a giant, lipstick stomach. Finally, wildly popular Lodown magazine is celebrating its 100th issue – drop by their two day exhibition to see screenings, art pieces and more all curated by the magazine, alongside rare editions of back issues from the last two decades. Happy browsing! (Text: Antonia Harris / Photo: (bottom) Ghada Amer, (top) Bernheimer Contemporary) The full Gallery Weekend Program can be found here. Nowadays, I tend to enjoy quality bars that serve great drinks and food. Yes, food – something that most Berlin bars seem to be missing. Drinking makes me peckish, so savory treats are always welcome. I knew that Pauly Bar housed some of the best bartenders in town: Bobbi and Justin, who will shake that shaker until their arms go numb to create the perfect foamy drink for you. However, the bar has recently given their food menu a makeover, including some mouth-watering plates like homemade cold cuts and wagyu entrecôte with potato puree, all coming from the same kitchen as Pauly Saal’s dishes. My personal favorite is the deep fried whole cauliflower, cooked sous-vide. The food perfectly accompanies their beautifully presented and next-level cocktails. Try their sake, Williams pear, homemade Bergamot syrup and lime concoction called “Lost in Translation” – refreshing and perfect. Although I probably had one too many drinks, I woke up the next day hangover free, thanks to the food and the expert mixing. After two years of renovation by renowned British minimalist architect John Pawson, the heavyset concrete structure will house the East Asian and contemporary art collection of Désiré Feuerle. The German collector has established a reputation for curating works spanning wildly different artistic eras and styles, and the new gallery space will see the curious combination of 7th century Khmer stone sculptures alongside works by Anish Kapoor and Cristina Iglesias. This said, it’s undoubtedly the renovated space that has most grabbed my attention. Within its two meter thick walls, the bunker comprises one room interrupted with huge columns supporting an even thicker ceiling, all made of the highest-quality concrete. Complete with accented lighting and a traditional tearoom, experiencing the heavy atmosphere of the space will be as rewarding as viewing the collection itself. (Photo: (top, left) Gilbert McCarragher, (bottom) &beyond) The Feuerle Collection will be open to the public for a one-off preview week as part of Gallery Weekend, from 30.4-7.5.2016. The official opening will be in Autumn 2016. He lives in Berlin-Neukölln. MISCELLANEOUS / BERLIN OSTMOST — REFRESH YOURSELF WITH BUBBLING APPLE AND CIDER Craft coffee and craft beer may be all the rage, but at Ostmost, the emphasis is firmly placed on apples. This humble fruit is the base for all seven varieties of Ostmost juice and cider, and forms the core of the startup’s sustainability goals as they reap, replant and restore small “Streuobstwiesen”- wild orchards in rural Eastern Germany. This type of regional fruit cultivation is a practice in danger of being crushed by cheaper and more intense mass-production, yet Ostmost are dedicated to paying more in order to ensure both a better fruit quality, and the continuation of small, local production (check out this illustrated video to learn more!) Paul Döcker, Bernd Schock and Dennis Meier began to produce Ostmost in June 2014 after building a network of distributors, farmers and working with a family-run “Kelterei”. Today, they not only have their original, 100% pure Apple drink, which is cloudy, strong and beautifully crisp, but also varieties such as Apple and Redcurrant, Apple and Beetroot, and their two Mild or Wild Outcider ciders. They make a gorgeous range of summer drinks, enjoyed outdoor and on the terrace of a café, and you can check out this online map to see where they are stocked, including the recent venue of Bio Company. In addition to lots of art, there is also something else to celebrate this weekend: our birthday! We have been sending out our newsletter for five years, and today we are on number 254. That’s a lot of newsletters, and we think it’s definitely reason enough to throw a party! Leave the rainy April weather behind you and come to the Botanischer Volkspark Pankow, to dance beneath the palm trees until morning. This Saturday (30.4.2016) come and dance with us as we say thank you for all the support, for the last five years and onwards.
