It’s the flowers hanging from the ceiling that are the first indication of what the atmosphere at Das Hotel holds. Flickering candlelight, a piano sitting quietly in the corner and windows opening onto the street add to the feeling that you’ve discovered a secret passageway from Kreuzberg to a miniature villa in Barcelona. Forgotten tunes play constantly through the hanging speakers as you stand chatting with your neighbors or other guests that crowd around Das Hotel’s tiny bar. As it grows late, people begin to dance between the tables and, on the weekend, if you head down to the basement club you’ll discover DJs — but don’t expect to find much more room.
