MA-MAKAN POP-UP: SPICING UP BRUNCH, MALAYSIAN-STYLE

MA-MAKAN POP-UP: SPICING UP BRUNCH, MALAYSIAN-STYLE

A mound of fragrant coconut rice serves as an anchor for piles of peanuts, crispy fried anchovies, a jammy boiled egg, spicy homemade sambal, slices of cooling cucumber, and unbelievable fish or vegetable curry. This edible palette of sorts is called Nasi Lemak, and it’s the national dish of Malaysia. Thanks to Kaylin Eu and her pop-up Ma-Makan — which serves up homestyle Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine — you can now get your hands on the eye-catching, deconstructed dish up around Berlin, too. The fourth edition takes place tomorrow (9.3.2018) and Saturday (10.3.2018) at Home: Coffee & Food and the menu this time around features tender curry puffs that you’ll want to inhale by the dozens and mouthwatering Onde-Onde – sweet glutinous pandan flavored rice balls filled with sticky palm sugar and rolled in coconut – in addition to the star Nasi Lemak, made according to Eu’s Singaporean family recipe book. As always, getting in early is recommended.
