In the space where he previously held gallery exhibitions, Jörg Johnen now shows elements of his own private collection. He’s dedicated two levels to the first round: The works on the ground floor revolve around the three central concepts of philosopher Peter Sloterdijk’s “Sphere Trilogy”. His explorations of bubbles, globes and foam resonate when taken together with Beate Kuhn’s sculptural fantasies and fragile bound gypsum castings by the Slovakian sculptor Mária Bartuszová. Thomas Ruff’s large-format photography from his series “Substrate” glimmers psychedelically on the wall, and an over-sized sphere by the sculptor Harald Klingelhöller leans against the corner. The double-level floor that Karin Sander had built into the space allows visitors to float above the artworks. Those who want to go further should venture up to the heritage listed rooftop, where the weathered surfaces of Robert Sturm’s ceramic sculptures respond to the building’s history.
