114 ÜBER MARZAHN: ART AND PERFORMANCE SHOWING THE DISTRICT IN A NEW LIGHT

114 ÜBER MARZAHN: ART AND PERFORMANCE SHOWING THE DISTRICT IN A NEW LIGHT

Marzahn – that’s where all those Plattenbau high-rise housing estates are, right? Well get ready to see another side to this concrete-Kiez with the 114 über Marzahn festival this Saturday (07.09.2019). Among the fruit trees and hiking trails of the Ahrensfelde hills, artists, scientists and musicians will spend twelve hours celebrating the district, proving to new Berliners that there’s culture beyond Neukölln. There will be a botanical walk, a sound walk and tour of the night sky. The focus is on Marzahn’s past, present and future. Meanwhile, artist collective Plastique Fantastique has erected a volcano on the summit, thus making the Marzahn hill Berlin’s highest elevation for one night only. What’s particularly valuable about this project is the concept behind it, developed by Dreitausend e.V.: all participants work on a voluntary basis and no materials will be thrown away, with a clean-up campaign planned ahead of the event as well as on the following day. This will ensure the Ahrensfelde hills will continue to be a meeting place in future. So, grab your hiking boots and head for the summit – Marzahn is much closer than you think.
