FEELS LIKE HOME: CAFÉ FLEURS FOR COLORFUL BOUQUETS, COFFEE AND FRENCH CAKES AND TARTS

FEELS LIKE HOME: CAFÉ FLEURS FOR COLORFUL BOUQUETS, COFFEE AND FRENCH CAKES AND TARTS

When I stop by Café Fleurs in the middle of the day, I expect the space to be quiet. Instead it’s a flurry of energy, paper lanterns and disco balls hang above tables of friends and families drinking coffee and eating cake. This energy is due, no doubt, to owner Etienne’s hospitality. He sports a cobalt-blue shirt and pink socks, his colorful, welcoming energy radiating through the space. Etienne was born in France and studied gastronomy there. Flowers were always a part of his dream – his mum reminding how at five he already wanted to be a florist. In May 2024 Café Fleurs opened. It’s a cozy café with coffee, cakes served on old-fashioned chinaware, savory options and, on weekends, flowers. Everything is made in-house except the breads and croissants, which come from La Maison. While they offer savory options (breakfast plate, quiche, soup or a sandwich), we strongly advise that you prioritize their sweets: their lemon meringue tart is perfectly balanced, their vanilla flan creamy but not too decadent.

Other than flowers and food, they occasionally host events in the space such as crochet or twice-monthly bouquet workshops. Outside of their home in Kreuzberg, you can sometimes find Etienne and the café’s “Happiness cart” sharing bouquets at SferaWolf Kino or other local spots. The flowers are sourced from a family in the Netherlands and are seasonal and Europe-focused. But of course, if this space is a reflection of his personality and mood, so too are the flowers: “Honestly sometimes I’m moody! Sometimes it’s just pink, once it was very beige and blue and I was wondering ‘what happened?!’.”

FOOD FOR THE BELLY & BRAIN — OUR TIPS FOR THE WEEKEND

FOOD FOR THE BELLY & BRAIN — OUR TIPS FOR THE WEEKEND

When the first week of January is over and you start to wonder whether it’s still okay to say “Happy New Year”, some of us feel our feet tingling again. Where to, where to? For those of you itching to get out and about this weekend, here are our recommendations for you… Tonight (09.01.2025) at 7 pm, the group exhibition “UnNatural Encounters” opens at Silent Green. It’s about (it couldn’t be more relevant) data and empathy, art and technology and, of course, visualization. The whole thing takes place in cooperation with the “European Media Art Platform” and Transmediale, and if you can’t make it tonight, you can see the exhibition until 19.01. On Saturday (11.01.) there’s something for your ears and stomach at Kreuzberg listening bar, Unkompress. From 11 am to 11 pm, there will be food and drinks. The creator of “Perhaps Today“, a café from Seoul, will bring her culinary reinterpretation of Korean fermented flavors. there’ll be sandwiches, soup and cookies, coffee and cool drinks. Afterward, head to Charlottenburg: at Pied-à-terre, shooting star Neda Aydin opens with new works in a just-right-but-not-too-smooth aesthetic. On Sunday (12.01.), the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection presents art from over a hundred years ago: in the group exhibition “Evil Flowers” — which explores the influence of Baudelaire’s “Les Fleurs du Mal” — there is much to discover. Afterward, perhaps a walk through the Charlottenburger Schloßpark or a stroll down Kantstraße? We heard Lon Men is open again. And then, we hate to say it, the weekend is already over.

Oh, and for those who prefer to cook for themselves, next Sunday (19.01.), Miso Miso is giving a workshop at Soi & co.in Linienstraße on how to make perfect miso, which you can take home with you. There will be snacks, green tea, different types of miso to taste and a sweet surprise. Who can resist? So get out your pen and mark your calendars: the year fills up faster than you think.
