Walking through Charlottenburg’s market in Karl-August-Platz reminds me of the time when I used to go hunting for mushrooms, excitedly as a kid in the woods with my grandmother. Only here, Pilzkönigin (queen of mushrooms) has already picked and arranged the mushrooms in pretty baskets, conveniently sorted by type for you. You’ll find different kinds of oyster mushrooms, shimeji, organic button mushrooms, porcini, chanterelles, wild sweet chestnuts, and last but not least aromatic truffles. The first truffles of the season (tuber uncinatum) are on display in a bell jar – it’s hard to resist! In case this is not adventurous enough for you, Brandenburg’s mixed forests not only offer beautiful fall foliage but ideal hunting grounds for mushroom foraging. The season is ending soon, so get your rubber boots on and go! (Text & photos: Milena Kalojanov)
