SUBIN KIM: DELICATE PAINTING ON UPCYCLED VINTAGE SILK SHIRTS

SUBIN KIM: DELICATE PAINTING ON UPCYCLED VINTAGE SILK SHIRTS

Sometimes we come across an artist whose modest presentation of their work belies its great beauty. Such is the case with Subin Kim. The designs she creates in her Kreuzberg apartment are not only a sustainable answer to fast fashion; they’re also really cool. The career that took Kim from her native South Korea to Paris via China could have culminated in her creating an own fashion label. Instead, it was her artistic passion that prevailed. Inspired by antique Asian paintings, her favored medium to embellish with her light brush strokes are loose silk shirts, found while rummaging through flea markets stalls. Her abstract figures in motion — which she perfected in life drawing classes — look just as good on denim. See for yourself at Grus Grus in Wedding or Dandy Horse Berlin, which sells Kim’s blouses, bomber jackets and jeans. The artist also accepts commissions — drop her a line before you consider saying goodbye to your old silk tops. (Text: Jasmin Tomschi / Photos: Subin Kim & Raphael Ganahl)

SEOUL: MKW RETURNS WITH A FASHION DROP AND ART EXHIBITION

SEOUL: MKW RETURNS WITH A FASHION DROP AND ART EXHIBITION

After a long break and re-branding, Mina’s store MKW is reopening tonight (07.07.2022), showcasing fashion, music and art from the Korean creative scene and beyond. Those who know Mina’s little mecca for fashion and art are already aware of her excellent taste. Besides pieces by Kreuzberg designer Hien Le and handmade ceramics by Mónica Vicente, there will be a small, thoughtfully curated selection of handpicked works by small brands and designers from Korea. There are still plenty of surprises in store, so let your curiosity lead the way and hurry: it’s first come first served, with stock strictly limited. Amongst the items you’ll find bright and playful colors, timeless cuts and innovative textures. Korean and Berlin-based artist Cho Juheon brings impressive interior design with art installations, while artist and designer Subin Kim will be showing ink prints. Live music to accompany the opening evening comes from DJ Whatisyourlastname

GRUS GRUS: A VINTAGE, COFFEE & ART OASIS IN WEDDING

GRUS GRUS: A VINTAGE, COFFEE & ART OASIS IN WEDDING

Sustainable shopping is currently on everyone’s agenda, and rightfully so. And one of the chicest selections of second-hand pieces has been drawing even Neuköllners across the river to visit its store in Wedding since its opening in October 2018. It becomes clear why right upon entering: Grus Grus‘ atmosphere, with its warm beige tones and natural materials, reflects owner and artist Dóra Földes‘ innate sense of style and attention to detail. A selection of second-hand pieces, inspired by ’80s and ’90s minimalist fashion and hand-picked by Dóra from around Europe, is arranged according to color on racks that frame the room. Above them hang large-format artworks by Dóra – these, too, are for sale. Her expressive style evokes the delicate textile paintings of fellow artist Subin Kim, whose custom silk shirts and jeans are also sold here. Come for the clothing and stay for a coffee. Previously a barista at Bonanza, Dóra serves impeccable flat whites and espressos made with the Kreuzberg roaster’s beans. Don’t feel shy about lingering or asking for styling tips — Dóra’s warmth and passion for her profession are infectious, and make Grus Grus the kind of place you want to return to again and again.
