A NEW COMPANION TO BRUNO TAUT’S HUFEISENSIEDLUNG

A NEW COMPANION TO BRUNO TAUT’S HUFEISENSIEDLUNG

Bruno Taut’s Hufeisensiedlung, literally translated as horse-shoe estate, is internationally recognized by architects, artists and tourists alike. Taut, responsible for building more than 10,000 apartments for Germany’s working class, was and is considered a genius of social housing. Now his work can be even better understood. Graphic designer Ben Buschfeld has taken the opportunity to create an architectural and artistic guide to Taut’s famous Hufeisensiedlung, filled not only with portraits and pictures, but also with fascinating insights from planners and inhabitants into the status quo of the housing estate. Now you can roam the premises marvelling at Taut’s fantastic use of colour while clutching a detailed guide, filled with previously unpublished photos and diagrams. The German book, entitled ‘Bruno Taut’s Hufeisensiedlung‘, published in 2015 by Nicolai Verlag, allows this landmark building to be intimately explored. For those who also wish to continue their journey, the next stop should surely be Taut’s home, the Tautes Heim, previously recommended in the guest post in Newsletter #88 from 2012. Happy wandering!
