Sustainable shopping is more than a buzzword and for 2020 it’s time to get serious about where your coin goes. Enter AllBirds, the sleek, sustainable shoe label from San Francisco who recently opened their first German store in Mitte. Bright and minimal, the shop has chairs customised by local collective Old Yellow, and fun Berlin-inspired laces in shades like “currywurst red”, which are free to take home. The environment is central to AllBirds – from the premium natural materials down to the recycled shoe boxes that line the till area. The shoes are made from sustainably-sourced Merino wool, eucalyptus, castor beans and recycled plastic, and other brands are encouraged to adopt the Sweetfoam open-source technology in their carbon negative sole material. All this without sacrificing on style or comfort – speaking of which, see for yourself if you agree with Time magazine that they’re the “world’s most comfortable shoe”. They’re washable, super soft, and since wool is antibacterial and moisture wicking, you can wear them without socks. Sustainability, one step at a time. (Text: Emily Miotke / Photos: AllBirds)
