Certain people find areas of Neukölln intimidating; I even have a tote bag that reads “You are scared of Hermannplatz”. On the way to Fellfisch café, it seemed to me like Hermannplatz should be replaced by Hermannstrasse. However, once I had sat down at a beautiful wooden table with a bowl of ripe lemons in front of me, with the speakers humming relaxing background music, I remembered why I came here. It’s a tasty breakfast in the ultimate feel-good atmosphere. The vegan pastes, bread, apricot jam and other toppings are all homemade, and the eggs they serve are cooked to perfection. If you’re looking for a reason to stay after breakfast is finished, then you can browse through the postcards on offer from Paulina Gimpel, or the small jewelry display from owner Eva Fischer, who doubles as a goldsmith. For the lunch, and for the homemade cake, I shall most definitely come back another day. (Text: Ann-Katrin Seibel)
