Amidst the flagship stores in Mitte, you now have to look a little closer to discover the few curated boutiques that remain. However, on Auguststraße, there’s still a place that stands out for hand-picked fashion and accessories: April First. The name isn’t an April Fool’s joke, but rather a nod to the birthday of founder Carolin Dunkel. Before opening her store, Carolin worked in the media and fashion world, and since then, she has curated a selection of international brands and accessories that are otherwise hard to find in Berlin – like labels from Los Angeles. For example, Agolde offers trendy denim styles, and Xírena features casual blouses in various colors. The looks from Alémais are more vibrant but still wearable: the printed silk shirts and pants evoke the charm of an Italian country villa and are perfect not just for the Australian brand’s weather but also for Berlin’s summer days. Blazé Milano has the most beautiful blazers, ideal for both the office and evening outings. Another highlight is the iconic bucket bag by Mansur Gavriel.
Carolin also offers a wide range of rare fabrics, including Coqui Coqui from Tulum. So whether you’re looking for a seasonal statement piece or an elegant ensemble, April First has something special for every occasion. Speaking of special occasions: you can also rent a dress here. Through April Second, the store offers dresses from the New York brand Ulla Johnson for borrowing. And if textiles alone don’t complete your look, there’s also an in-house Fine Jewelry line and selected brass and marble furniture, just like what you see in the store, available for purchase. You can, of course, browse the April First selection online, but shopping in-store is particularly enjoyable. With personalized advice on-site, you’re sure to discover pieces you might never have tried on your own. Carolin Dunkel demonstrates the magic of fashion: it can express your character, boost your confidence, and simply make you happy.
