GROß GLIENICKER SEE — SWIMMING AND BOATING IN THE COOL, CLEAR WATER

This weekend is going to be a hot one – the perfect time then to hit the water with friends. Groß Glienicker See is one of the purest lakes around and offers both official bathing areas and numerous smaller places with access to the water – just wander around the shores and you are bound to find a sweet spot. The Berlin–Brandenburg boundary (and previously the East-West German border) lies in the middle of the water, which at eleven meters at its deepest is well suited to swimming. The water itself is so clear and pure that you can see small shoals of fish as you swim. In the middle of the water sit two small islands which you can reach in comfort in a rental boat or, if you are feeling brave, by swimming. For a more relaxed afternoon there is a sunbathing lawn on the western side that offers sun loungers but also numerous trees offering shade from the sun. If you need refueling, the nearby Seeperle kiosk will gladly keep you cool with an iced coffee and a portion of fries (“Rot” and/or “Weiß” of course). Time to pack you swimwear, sun cream and camera and head west. (Text & Photos: Ramona Razaghmanesh)
