Berlin is surrounded by countless lakes: over 3,000 to be precise. There’s always hype around the best lake each summer, so it’s no wonder you see half your neighborhood when you come to take a dip at your chosen spot. Of course, people like us writing about it doesn’t help. But you gotta spread the love, right? Bernsteinsee is no longer much of a secret, but it offers a delightfully relaxed alternative to the busy inner-city bathing spots. Where you want to go is the south side of the lake. Park your car on the road and walk through a beautiful pine forest for 20 minutes before reaching the lake on its less developed “wild side.” It’s one of those rare lakes with a large white sandy beach, and with plenty of space to spread your towels and bathe in the sun it’s perfect for big groups and families. For now this is my favorite lake in Brandenburg, until the next secret spot is discovered… (Text: Sven Hausherr / Photos: Nina Trippel)
