“Let them eat cake,” goes the infamous quote. Unlike Marie Antoinette, the folks at Black Apron know exactly what the people need. A delightful cafe-cum-bakery for American-style baked treats, Black Apron originates from Hildesheim, the hometown of its owner Özlem Sögüt. After a detour via Codos Coffee in Hamburg, it landed in Berlin in June 2019, captivating with excellent freshly-made baked goods (think cheesecake and carrot cakes galore) and a simple, modern interior – not to mention the delicious matcha and turmeric lattes. You can even watch the bakers at work at the back of the shop, where the pros are always experimenting, hence the novel and constantly changing range of food. At the bar is where classics like the “Great Tart” can be found – a vegan and gluten-free tart with almonds, homemade coconut-turmeric paste, lemon and raspberry puree, with no sugar added. And for something more substantial, they now do a comfort-food brunch at the weekend. We’re lining up already. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Johanna Rademacher-Flesland)
