CURATOR’S TOUR & BREAKFAST WITH MICHAEL SAILSTORFER

CURATOR’S TOUR & BREAKFAST WITH MICHAEL SAILSTORFER

This year’s Art Week calendar offers plenty of options to discover Berlin’s art world. I’m planning on the guided tour at Haus am Waldsee; Dr. Katja Blomberg will introduce “B-Side” by artist Michael Sailstorfer. My most recent encounter with his work was at Sammlung Boros, where his popcorn machine left a lasting olfactory and visual memory. Again at Haus am Waldsee, you’ll witness his sense of humor, although there will be no popcorn; instead, breakfast will be served after the tour, weather permitting, in the sculpture garden. And to top it off, the tour and breakfast will by accompanied by the artist himself. (Text: Nina Trippel)

MALIN ELMLID RECOMMENDS: TAUSENDSUEND — CAKES BY LAURA-XIMENA VILLANUEVA GUERRA

MALIN ELMLID RECOMMENDS: TAUSENDSUEND — CAKES BY LAURA-XIMENA VILLANUEVA GUERRA

It started off with a classic bread trade: Laura offered to make the dream cake for my birthday four years ago for a barter. “What do you like?” she asked, “blueberries and fudge” I answered. Magic happened and she baked the most amazing cake ever. We started trading; I baked bread for her dinners, and she made personalized cakes for any special birthday parties I was invited to. She successfully combined pretzels, sea salt caramels and chocolate in one amazing cake. Blackberries, vodka butter cream and raw cacao nibs I brought back from Nicaragua in another. Not to mention the layered strawberry rhubarb cake with white chocolate ganache spiked with aphrodisiac tonka beans she created for my book. She can make a cake that follows your stories perfectly, while never compromising on quality. By using Belgian chocolate, her ganache simply tastes better; using eggs no older than 2 days, her meringue naturally is baked to perfection. Quality should have its price, but if you want to celebrate with a perfect cake and can’t manage it yourself, then no one else can do it better than Laura-Ximena Villanueva Guerra and her enterprise Tausendsuend. Malin Elmlid has been living in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg since 2000 and writes for various travel and lifestyle publications. She is the founder of the trading network The Bread Exchange and her book is coming out in October.

ART & PARTY AT THE FORMER CZECH CULTURE CENTER

ART & PARTY AT THE FORMER CZECH CULTURE CENTER

Leipziger Strasse is getting another upgrade; the former Czech institution for culture is being revamped by Conny Opper and his team. I’m sure a lot will happen there in the years to come. Already yesterday saw its open house with various artist installations and music that continued into the wee hours. The unofficial abc reception by Bureau N & Niche will be held there today, and the Berlin blog “I Heart Berlin” will be celebrating its 7th year anniversary on Saturday hosting: a photo group show “We Are Berlin”, a pop-up barber shop, and the 3rd Berlin Film Night with a bunch of Berlin-related short films. Of course all this will be followed by another infamous I Heart Berlin party, where the guests dress to impress and dance until dawn. (Text: Sven Hausherr)

TILL THE COWS COME HOME — A HAVEN FOR VEGETARIANS

TILL THE COWS COME HOME — A HAVEN FOR VEGETARIANS

We had breakfast last weekend at Till The Cows Come Home, a tiny restaurant-in-a-container that is bursting with creative, healthy, and appetizing menu. I certainly enjoyed every bite of “Heaven On A Bread” – ratatouille featuring grilled eggplant and tomatoes topped with a poached egg on a pita bread. I can’t wait to return soon to try all of their extravagant smoothies and juice blends too. All choices are made with finest, organic and often regional ingredients. You will never even notice that everything here is vegetarian or vegan. This open air location is not suitable for cold weather, thus the future of TTCCH is wide open – go while summer lasts! NATURE IN THE CITY: TAKE THE TRAM TO HABERMANNSEE LAKE

NATURE IN THE CITY: TAKE THE TRAM TO HABERMANNSEE LAKE

Every year, there’s a hype about Berlin’s next best-kept secret lake to cool down during hot summer days. I usually just browse through online maps and search for blue spots that are surrounding the city by the thousands. Last weekend, I wanted to go to a lake that’s not too far and reachable by public transportation; we ended up at Habermannsee in Hellersdorf, a perfect place for me. It’s equipped with plenty of sunbathing areas all around the shore, grassy areas for couples, and sandy beaches with a good stretch of shallow water for the little ones. And, to top it off, the water is warm! (I for one dislike cold water). I even saw some folks BBQing, although I’m not sure if it’s allowed. Needless to say, if you can’t find me this summer, you know where I am… (Text & Photos: Sven Hausherr)
