CORDOBAR: THE WONDERFUL GERMAN-AUSTRIAN WINE JOINT

CORDOBAR: THE WONDERFUL GERMAN-AUSTRIAN WINE JOINT

Could there be a better proof of the German-Austrian friendship than a wine bar created by both nationalities? In September 2013, Gerhard Retter, Christof Ellinghaus, Willi Schlögl, and Jan Ole Gerster (known for directing the Berlin film “Oh Boy”) opened the Cordobar together. Instead of a quiet atmosphere, you’ll find funny elements like a disco ball or neon sign that says “residual alcohol is a powerful drug” in German. The menu offers food but naturally the main player here are the wines. Besides the twenty classics, the friendly staff can offer 700 to 1000 bottles at any given night, of which around 40 are served by the glass. Cordobar’s name was taken from the Soccer World Cup 1978, when Germany lost against Austria. Some may still be dwelling in the disgrace of the past; if you happen to be one of them, please refrain from using their restrooms, where the radio commentary of the game is being played on a loop. All others can raise their glasses to this transnational friendship. Prost! (Text: Eva Biringer)
