Since opening ten years ago, the vast cathedral-like Kesselhaus at the Kindl Centre for Contemporary Art has housed installations that do indeed have a religiosity in their ability to provoke awe. From Mona Hatoum’s diagonal steel frame to Alfredo Jaar’s metal cube bathed in red light, these are ambitious artworks, realized at scale. This soaring fusion of art, architecture and history will be on full display this Saturday (18.07.2026) when the former brewery celebrates its tenth anniversary as an art venue. As well as an Open Studio at the Kesselhaus, the rest of the Centre will be offering a program of tours, workshops and performances, plus free entry to all exhibitions. Special shows include a five-hour performance by Montenegro-born artist Dante Buu, whose practice “extend[s] the body beyond its limits”, and “Oral is Moral” by choreographer Ania Nowak, a performance billed as an “open rehearsal of a striptease”.
Sound and video have always featured heavily in Kindl exhibitions, and so it is this Saturday: there’s a performance using the copper brewing vats by sound artist Daniel Meir, and a M1 VideoSpace retrospective that revisits seminal video works screened on the walls of the former machine room (now called “Maschinenhaus M0”). Rounding it all off is a program of outdoor music from DJ Saint September in the beer garden where you can raise a glass to a decade of defining, daring contemporary art.
