FLORIAN STORM RECOMMENDS: JONES FISCHLADEN

FLORIAN STORM RECOMMENDS: JONES FISCHLADEN

Just as Bubba could list countless shrimp dishes in Forrest Gump, I’ve recently become skilled at identifying a vast range of fish. That’s thanks to Jones Fischladen, which opened its doors in early 2017 in my neighborhood, Florakiez, with a counter stocked with fresh, regional and sustainably-sourced fish and seafood. The assortment changes weekly, so thanks to the connoisseurship of the staff, I’m always able to find the perfect catch for whichever dish I’m preparing that night. As for owner John Jones, his love of seafood began 10 years ago in a fine London fishmonger. A friend of his uncle taught him everything he needed to know about fish from the North Sea. Jones’ path led him through the fish markets of Leeds to Berlin, where he refined his trade at KaDeWe and later, Rogacki. In his own shop, fish are delivered whole and filleted on site. A beautiful sight for sore eyes is the orange-red Scottish salmon, the freshly caught Dutch herring and delicious sardines — not to mention the oyster bar. Soon to become the specialty of the house is the smoked haddock from London — ideal for preparing an English breakfast or the classic Scottish soup, Cullen Skink — ask for the recipe behind the counter. (Text: Florian Storm / Photos: Pamina Aichhorn)
