It’s Christmas market season, and if you want to enjoy your roasted chestnuts away from the crowded mainstream, don’t miss the Heissa Holzmarkt 25, opening its gates for a third round of festive fun. Behind this cozy, mellow market is the Holzmarkt team, whose friends and regulars run many of the colorful, alternative stalls. Family fun is assured, with a vintage carousel dating from 1962, indoor children’s activities and a fire-spitting Christmas tree. The stalls are perfect for your Christmas goodies, and of course there’s the yummy delicacies: Käsespätzle, cinnamon rolls, and savoury spiced veggie Gyros, with wild boar and venison roasts for the meat lovers. Be sure to check out the World Trash Center, where old plastic is reformed and Barbie dolls are repurposed as kitschy lamps and mirrors. If you’re after something snug and cushy, head into the Weinhandlung for a tasty tipple. Ready to brave the outdoors? Go find a spot by the open fire and enjoy a hot cup of Glühwein to soothe your hands and heart. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Savannah van der Niet)
