Ice cream is a perfect companion to summer shopping on Ku’damm, but where to find a local parlour for a cooling break? Katchi, nestled on a quiet side street off Savignyplatz, is your answer. Since opening two summers ago, the cafe has developed a laid back, community feel with a sizable, shady terrace to watch the world go by. Move inside and you are greeted by a technicolor array of different ice creams – 34 flavors in all – a big number of which are vegan. Founder Conny Köhler is a passionate ice cream experimenter, and her ice “lab” – visible through a large window – constantly churns out wild and wonderful flavors: “Willy Wonka”, an impossibly rich yet somehow dairy-free chocolate ice cream, or the tonka bean (think almond-meets-vanilla) topped off with raspberry and white chocolate. The blood orange, mango and watermelon sorbets are great lighter options while the bubble waffles loaded with ice cream, nuts, chocolate or fruit offer maximum indulgence. One visit and – like many of Katchi’s customers – you’ll be a regular. (Text: Benji Haughton / Photos: Ramona Razaghmanesh)
