KRUMULUS: A TREASURE TROVE OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS RIGHT AT SÜDSTERN

“Liebe kleine Krumulus, lass mich niemals werden gruß” (“Oh my dearest little squiggle. Don’t let me grow any biggle”) is the spell Pippi Longstocking and her friends recite at the end of their adventures, explains Anna Morlinghaus, whose bookshop takes its name from the tale. Krumulus is Berlin’s – or rather Germany’s – most beautiful bookshop for children and teens and winner of the 2018 German bookshop prize. Entering the charming Kreuzberg store on a Saturday, you’re met with hustle and bustle, but given the care put into the shop’s look and feel, it’s never overwhelming. In addition to giving passionate book advice, Krumulus specializes in offering a remarkable selection of titles including beautiful picture books, out-of-print antique treasures and even French and English books. An event program is central to the concept and includes readings and children’s concerts. The 120-year-old hand printing press allows kids to have some fun under expert supervision while adults browse the shelves and stock up on bread and flowers for the weekend at the Neuer Markt am Südstern next door.
