MAHLER 9: A RENEWED TRIBUTE TO A MASTER’S LAST SYMPHONY

MAHLER 9: A RENEWED TRIBUTE TO A MASTER’S LAST SYMPHONY

How about an epic start to next week? A Monday night spent immersed in rousing philharmonic melodies — listening to one of the greatest symphonies of all time, to be precise — sets a profound tone for days to come. Life, death, and the existential anguish invoked by the gap between them — all this is expressed in Mahler’s 9th Symphony. On 7.5.2018, your chance to come under its spell presents itself at the Berlin Philharmonie, where the Berlin University of the Arts(UdK Berlin) Symphony Orchestra will perform the masterpiece under the direction of Steven Sloane, following Dieter Schnebel’s “Mahler Moment from Re-Visions II”. The German composer will be in conversation with musicologist Prof. Dr. Ariane Jeßulat prior to the concert in the Philharmonie’s Hermann Wolff Hall, sharing his take on this epic work that marked the dawn of a new era in orchestral music. Pick up tickets here for an extraordinary Monday night — which can be the first of many, by the way, given that the night is a prelude to “crescendo”, the UdK Berlin’s festival of music, coming up from 25.5.-9.6.2018. See how you can start future weeks off on the right note here. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos; clockwise: UdK Berlin (Timo Brüsewitz), Marcus Witte)
