“THIS PLACE” — PHOTOGRAPHIC STORIES FROM ISRAEL AND THE WEST BANK AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM BERLIN

“THIS PLACE” — PHOTOGRAPHIC STORIES FROM ISRAEL AND THE WEST BANK AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM BERLIN

When we think about Israel and the West Bank, it’s easy to get lost in the politics of the place. But what about the people? “This Place”, an exhibition at the Jewish Museum led by French photographer Frédéric Brenner, tells their stories through photos. Brenner commissioned 12 different photo artists to spend extended periods in the region, and the result is a collection of more than 200 photographs exploring themes of landscape, homeland, identity and family. Each photographer shows us a different perspective. Wendy Ewald invites people to tell their own stories by photographing themselves and their daily lives in the region. Meanwhile photographer Jungjin Lee‘s landscape photographs are characterized by a melancholic, simple beauty. Her large-scale images of the desert point to the region’s conflict, managing to be both poignant and serene at the same time. The exhibition is an intimate, but above all human account of Israel and the West Bank, a region where life is so often dogged by international geopolitics. INTO THE WOODS — FIELD NOTES, RECIPES AND EXPERT TIPS FOR FORAGERS

INTO THE WOODS — FIELD NOTES, RECIPES AND EXPERT TIPS FOR FORAGERS

Are you looking for both adventure and a break from the hustle and bustle of the city? Moritz Schmid, author of Into the Woods, invites you to rediscover the thrill of losing yourself in the forest. Reading “Into the Woods” feels like wandering around with a friend who loves to share their knowledge of the forest and its infinite mushroom species before you gather around a table to enjoy your haul. The book shares the golden rules of mushroom hunting, what to take along on a foraging trip, the ABCs of mushroom identification – hello real chanterelle, bay bolete and orange birch bolete – and how to skillfully prepare your find. How about smoked porcini mushroom butter, chanterelles on grilled cucumber and barbequed cep boletus with wild herbs and mojo verde? The book is full of compelling testimonies by people who reveal the effect the forest has on them. Just reading it leaves you relaxed, inspired and full of wanderlust. CONCIERGE COFFEE #2: A CAFFEINE KICK FROM A SHIPPING CONTAINER

CONCIERGE COFFEE #2: A CAFFEINE KICK FROM A SHIPPING CONTAINER

In July 2019 Concierge Coffee expanded, and now serves the finest coffee and pastries from a shipping container docked in an inconspicuous backyard on Köpenicker Strasse in addition to their the charming cafe on Paul-Lincke-Ufer. The container cafe was created in cooperation with building owners Vonder, and one thing is certain: this wood-lined container is at least as special and unique as the first location, and has proved a truly successful expansion. Of course, it serves what Concierge Coffee is all about: excellent filter coffee, americanos, cold brew and flat whites. And as usual, their croissants always pair nicely with your coffee, no matter the time of day. So if you are anywhere near Schlesi, Kotti or Jannowitzbrücke, take a little break away from the hustle and bustle at this new location. When it starts to get cold: try their warming and invigorating Concierge Dirty Chai Latte. (Text: Lisa Strube / Photos: Johanna Rademacher-Flesland)

ZÀGARA: SCHLESI’S SUNNIEST ICE CREAM SHOP FOR GOOD-MOOD GELATO

ZÀGARA: SCHLESI’S SUNNIEST ICE CREAM SHOP FOR GOOD-MOOD GELATO

Yellow is a color that draws your attention. On a hot, early summer afternoon I was cycling along Köpenicker Straße and discovered Zàgara, a sunny Italian ice cream shop which I certainly won’t miss again. Thanks to Tiziana, Gil and Riccardo, who brought their vision of their own ice cream parlor to life when they opened Zàgara in May 2019, there is now another Italian gelato spot not far from Schlesi. It’s since become my place for an after-work treat, and for good reason: the shop is so charmingly different and colorful. Its vibrant furniture and plants, as well as the friendly trio themselves, are so cheerful and inviting. Whether for a breakfast ice cream sandwich with brioche from Sironi or an afternoon affogato pick-me-up, there’s always an occasion to visit. Our insider tip: try the organic ricotta with candied lemon and the vegan dark chocolate with beetroot. (Text: Lisa Strube / Photos: Johanna Rademacher-Flesland)

URBAN COSMETICS BERLIN — NATURAL UNISEX SKINCARE FOR TRUE URBANITES

URBAN COSMETICS BERLIN — NATURAL UNISEX SKINCARE FOR TRUE URBANITES

Natural cosmetics produced locally? That was Fabian and Karin’s lightbulb moment in 2016 and they’ve been selling sustainable, vegan cosmetics ever since. Urban Cosmetics is as simple as it sounds: cruelty-free, unisex cosmetic products, handmade in small quantities at a Berlin workshop with only the purest, most natural ingredients. My favorites are the bath salts with coconut milk, rosemary and rose petals and the three-step facial care set which includes a facial cleanser, a hyaluron moisturizing serum and a facial raspberry seed oil. The moisturizer and oil are sold separately, so you can decide what ratio of the two products to apply according to the season and time of day. The visionary spirit of the founders does not stop here: their idea is to develop natural cosmetics in an urban context of art, culture and city gardening, while staying true to their motto: “In editions we grow, in artists we invest!” This means collaborating with street artists like Neisscaps, whose special edition baseball caps are available at the Kreuzberg store. Look out for artworks – you’ll soon find some here too. All in the spirit of Urban Cosmetics! (Text: Lisa Strube / Photos: Johanna Rademacher–Flesland)
