GRASS IS THE NEW PINE: ADVENT & BLACK FRIDAY AT MARSANO

GRASS IS THE NEW PINE: ADVENT & BLACK FRIDAY AT MARSANO

This Advent, Marsano is swapping pine needle wreaths and the other usual festive deco suspects for a trans-seasonal concept. Inspired by pastoral German landscapes — as viewed from a train window this long, hot summer just gone: grasses are the hero material in its pre-Christmas offerings this year, some of which were hand collected on Sylt. The grass theme was not only chosen for its delightful aesthetic effect, but also with sustainability in mind: the wreaths last far past December, making for beautiful wall decorations well into the new year. Marsano’s candles abide by the same principle: their high-quality Swiss stumps have a burning time of around 180 hours. Tonight (22.11.2018, 17h) marks the official opening of the Advent exhibition: Now’s the time to nab the most beautiful wreaths (and enjoy a glass of wine). P.S. Should you stop by Friday, you’ll have the chance to take home a bit of non-floral deco, too — thanks to a Black Friday discount of 20% on all non-Christmassy objects, furniture and accessories. GAZZO — FEEL-GOOD SOURDOUGH PIZZA & PROSECCO ON TAP

GAZZO — FEEL-GOOD SOURDOUGH PIZZA & PROSECCO ON TAP

Named after the loan shark from the Rocky films, Neukölln’s latest pizza-slinging joint has been full from day one. It could be thanks to the pink neon sign on its inviting pumpkin-colored exterior, outside which a Vespa is often parked. Or the Prosecco on tap and range of Italian spritzes. Not to mention its perfectly crispy organic sourdough pizza base recipe, which is fired at a slightly lower cooking temperature than the classic Neapolitan style. But what we suspect keeps the punters coming back for more is Gazzo’s buffalo milk offerings: Manifested in the mozzarella di buffala starter — plump, silky and served with chunks of colorful tomatoes. Or atop several of the nine pizzas — together with, for example, roasted aubergine, caramelised garlic and onions and pecorino. Autumn specials like nutty charred kale, smoked provolone, caramelised onion and organic mountain parmesan make it hard to stick to just one pizza. But sacrifices are sometimes worth making — like for the (Brandenburg) buffalo milk soft serve, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt. It’s indulgent, and leaves you feeling in high spirits — as does the cheeky interior of this establishment, which feels like it’s been a fixture in this neck of the woods for far longer than just two months. A CAFFEINATED COUNTDOWN: THE TRES CABEZAS ADVENT CALENDAR

A CAFFEINATED COUNTDOWN: THE TRES CABEZAS ADVENT CALENDAR

Who says you have to wait till the 24th to share gifts? After all, the lead up to Christmas is half the fun. Making it easy for your favorite coffee lover this year is Tres Cabezas, who have put together the kind of calendar you want to check every morning. The 2002-established Berlin roastery — which recently opened its third 19grams café in a surprisingly peaceful corner of Alexanderplatz — has put together a coffee advent calendar which showcases the diversity of the roasters’ sourcing, from Costa Rica and Guatemala to Sumatra and India. Each day the lucky recipient will find one 50g tin containing a top notch Tres Cabezas single origin (choose between whole beans or pre-ground), accompanied by information on the coffee’s processing and cupping notes. It’s a particularly smart gift if you happen to live with the person you’re giving it to — after all, enjoyment shared is enjoyment doubled, right? P.S. Cee Cee readers get 5€ off with the code “Coffee3333” — right this way. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Tres Cabezas)

ARS ELECTRONICA INVESTIGATES THE ART OF IMPERFECTION

ARS ELECTRONICA INVESTIGATES THE ART OF IMPERFECTION

“When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this: you haven’t”. Those are the motivating words of Thomas A. Edison, whose wisdom on failure provided the inspiration behind art, tech and society platform Ars Electronica’s upcoming digital media exhibition, “Error — The Art of Imperfection“. On view from 17.11.2018 at Drive. Volkswagen Group Forum — as part of an ongoing collaboration between the two innovators — the group show presents a range of cutting-edge interactive machines, video works and innovative sound installations. Each work explores the idea of deviations from the norm, taking the concept of “failure” beyond its common association with start-up land jargon to question how non-judgmental approaches to the idea of “error” can improve our lives both on a personal and global level. From visual forensics and AI to bitcoin miners and robotics, this show offers a much-needed positive outlook for the future, one tentative iteration at a time. FACING NORTH KOREA: FOUR ARTISTS CONFRONT THE MYTHS

FACING NORTH KOREA: FOUR ARTISTS CONFRONT THE MYTHS

The West’s concurrent fascination with and repudiation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) is unabating. Yet its realities remain opaque, and the stereotypes surrounding it continue to be perpetuated. “Facing North Korea“, a new group show at Meinblau Projektraum aims to address this with the works of four artists confronting North Korean history, politics and culture in service of fostering greater understanding. Byungjun Kwon’s soundscape “Forest of Subtle Truth 3” (2017) explores the dark history of Kyodong — an island just below the military demarcation line. Chan Sook Choi’s installation “Yangjiri” (2018) focuses on the architecture of a South Korean propaganda village where North Korean war refugees were settled. In the name of radical empathy on a 2017 visit to the DPRK, Bernhard Draz inserted himself into modified propaganda posters, realized as a series of large-format paintings. And Georg Klein’s “The Sound before Silence – Souvenirs from North Korea” (2018) de- and re-constructs the performance of a traditional North Korean song, setting it in dialogue with South Korean Gayageum player Youjin Sung. Taken individually and together, the works promise thought-provoking perspectives on this country. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Bernhard Draz, Meinblau)
