Berlin has a weakness for niche interests. We’re talking films at the airport, ceramics in the park, record roulette, British short films, Egyptian brunch, and a dog show. Here comes CC’s Calendar Tips with our most niche tips for the days ahead. If you think Berlin can never have enough community gardens, keep the rest of the day free (30.07.). The Floating University is inviting people to a solidarity evening for Gemüse im Arsch — a new community garden at the Wagenplatz Marzipahn. With food, drinks, and music, donations will be collected for seeds, tools, and building materials, helping the garden continue to grow and making more communal gardening days possible. You could also dive into a different kind of experience today (30.07.). Natalie Pirmann from the creative studio Transforma combines a Gongfu tea ceremony with an electronic sound performance. The tea is the starting point for a shared journey through taste, movement, and sound. You can bring a yoga mat, blanket, or cushion and make yourself comfortable for the two-hour experience. And this is where journeys once began: at the former Tegel Airport. The resident Film Club 030, together with Frachtkante, invites you on Friday (31.07.) to an open-air cinema evening featuring DJ sets, a beer garden, and plenty of space to stretch out before the film begins. On to the next screen: if you still have room for more film stories, continue straight on to the British Shorts Summer Edition. Throughout the weekend (31.07.–02.08.), the festival presents the best-of selection from the previous edition, featuring short films ranging from comedy and animation to documentaries and more. If you prefer conversation over cinema, head towards Torstraße. Also on Friday (31.07.) is Ex to X, a new community format for FLINTA* creatives, launched by Angelique Houben and Stefanie Giesinger.
During the first gathering, the focus is on exchange, coffee, matcha, and working together throughout the day, before the evening flows into live music, DJ sets, wine, and art. The line-up includes, among others, Goldie, Dimi Rompos, and Anita B Queen. When things get animal-focused at Café Tiergarten, it can only mean one thing… Saturday (01.08.) and time for the annual Dog Show. Dogs of all sizes, personalities, and talents compete across five categories. Prizes include treats, trophies, and eternal neighborhood fame. Of course, you can also come along without a four-legged friend and simply watch. And if you love dogs but also love records, you can keep the day going at Refuge Worldwide. Also on Saturday (01.08.), Record Roulette invites everyone to a summer vinyl session where everyone brings a favorite record, and a draw decides who gets to share their personal love story with an album. Warming up the crowd are Ami Wokloniand Nadine Nzambisa, accompanied by Filipino snacks from Masarap. From shared records to shared picnics: throughout August (01–20.08.), Vitamin Color takes over the culinary program at Art Biesenthal. Particularly intriguing is Picnic in a Puzzle, which serves seasonal dishes on hand-painted trays that only come together as a larger artwork when all guests join in. The program is complemented by dinner series such as The Ever-Changing Table: surrounded by nature, a seasonal menu is served at a mirrored table, allowing landscape and cuisine to merge into one experience. On Sunday (02.08.), a visit to Magma in Kreuzberg is also worthwhile. This is where Nottomorrow celebrates the launch of its new studio. Behind the project is a Berlin collective of designers, artists, and strategists creating a place for exchange and collaboration. The opening will be celebrated with wine, cocktails, and aperitivos. At the same time (02.08.), Wasahlancelebrates its first birthday with an Egyptian all-day brunch at Riwaq. The bistro community space at Schlesisches Tor will become a meeting point for six hours of homemade Egyptian cuisine and celebration. If you like, you can swap cutlery for clay afterwards. Also on Sunday (02.08.), Clay Stories Berlin is moving its popular Clay Dates outdoors, to Margarete’s Garden, with a greenhouse and plenty of space to experiment. You can create your own bowls, cups, or other ceramic pieces, which will later be glazed and fired. No previous experience required. That applies to all kinds of niche interests.
