HONEST DUMPLING DINNER — KNÖDELWIRTSCHAFT OPENS SISTER RESTAURANT IN PRENZLAUER BERG

HONEST DUMPLING DINNER — KNÖDELWIRTSCHAFT OPENS SISTER RESTAURANT IN PRENZLAUER BERG

Having served knödel to the locals and visitors of Neukölln alike now for over nine years, owners Werner Gasser and Pavel Kluth have opened a second restaurant in Prenzlauer Berg, appropriately called Knödelwirtschaft North. Speaking of appropriate, it’s hard to believe owners Werner Gasser and Pavel Kluth found a location so fitting to serving plates of heart-warming Tirolean fare – think impressive dark wood ceiling details, a sweeping bar and original gothic typography painted on the walls. It was not until (the-ever-smiling) Werner explained that the place used to be a traditional guesthouse in a Genossenschaft that it all made more sense. It took just a few intentional contemporary interior design finishes, and the space aligned to the restaurant’s concept – an honouring of the tradition and simplicity both in food and style, delivered by a young and passionate team in a relaxed, warm environment.

Werner grew up in Bolzano, and the menu reflects the dishes he ate as a child. There is Crepe Soup (Frittatensuppe), Liver Dumpling Soup (Leberknödelsuppe), Beef Gulasch (Rindergulasch) and of course dumplings a.k.a. Knödel. Choose two or more dumplings from the ever changing menu of flavours, including classics such as cheese, bacon or liver, or something a little different such as sun-dried dried tomato, or wild garlic when in season. On the day we dined we chose a vegan spinach and mushroom knodel as well as a wild garlic one. They arrive at the table steaming under a sprinkle of cheese and a splash of melted butter (fried onions for the vegan option), accompanied by a crisp salad, tart sauerkraut and pickled vegetables. Our two big recommendations are: to order the mushroom sauce as the final addition to this perfectly balanced dish, and to leave space for yet another dumpling. This time sweet topped with a berry sauce, cream, cinnamon, nuts and sugar, mmm! Knödelwirtschaft is the perfect place to visit whether it’s for a summer celebration with friends sitting around on the terrace in the last rays of sunshine, a winter night date while the snow falls down outside, or your parents first introduction to this regional cuisine.
