FRESH VEGGIES FROM BERLIN’S FIRST AQUAPONIK FARM

FRESH VEGGIES FROM BERLIN’S FIRST AQUAPONIK FARM

Vegetables and herbs grown in Berlin? Yes, it’s possible even without your own garden. Bonus, you can get them in Tempelhof. Here at the ECF Farmer’s Market, find a greenhouse-and-fish-farm, shop included. The idea is based on the so-called aquaponik system and works like this: the water used to breed fish is also used to water the plants as it is high in nutrients, and thus the perfect natural fertilizer free of pesticides. You may shop on site or subscribe to their veggie box packed with goodies like tomatoes, eggplant, pepper, salad, cucumber and one of five types of basil, plus another herb pot, such as shiso cress or amaranth. The on-site store offers additional Berlin products such as honey, jam and organic meat specialities. Future plans may include a café, where customers can enjoy the fresh greens after a run or bike-ride around the abandoned air port. From October, the Berlin rosé bass will be for sale as well.
