UTA GROSENIK RECOMMENDS: SPÄTZLE UND KNÖDEL

UTA GROSENIK RECOMMENDS: SPÄTZLE UND KNÖDEL

I’ve lived in Friedrichshain for a year now. Besides Currywurst, I enjoy the countless exotic dishes offered by various little restaurants from all over the world in this neighborhood. My best friend, however, is from Allgau – so when we dine out, we often visit Spätzle und Knödel – just to make sure his homesickness won’t eat him alive. Prepare to leave all of Friedrichshain’s hipness behind you as you step into this place. Aside from the taxidermy of a boar’s head mounted on the wall, the restaurant is plain and simple; and so is the menu. Naturally, you’ll find Bavarian Spaetzle and Knoedel dumplings offered as Semmel (made with bread), Brezen (made with pretzels) or Serviettenknödel (steamed in a napkin). Others on the list are Zwiebelrostbraten, Schweinekrustenbraten, Sauerbraten, and Schnitzel (also offered with venison and boar during fall), and of course Bayrisch Kraut. Cloudy, hearty beer from southern Germany go perfectly with the food. These days, when we’re really in a good mood, we share a portion of Kaiserschmarrn or apricot dumplings after the meal. (Photos: Benjamin Lindenkreuz)
