ADOPT A DING! — IS THIS YOUR THING? AT WERKBUNDARCHIV MUSEM DER DINGE

A Wagenfeld egg cup, aluminum potato masher, red stand-up ball ashtray and plaster bust of Karl Marx await new caretakers. Sadly the salt shaker shaped like a crocodile-inspired men’s shoe has already been claimed. But fear not, you can still adopt your unique object through the Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge by becoming a “Dingpfleger:in.” Mark your calendar: 30.11.2024 Is This Your Thing? (Dingpflegetag). On this special day, current “Dingpfleger:innen” and those curious about joining are invited to visit the Museum der Dinge. The event includes a guided tour, coffee and cake, and the chance to select your favorite object from the museum’s displays. By participating in the “Dingpflegschaft”, you symbolically “adopt” an object for a year in exchange for a donation. To make it official, pose for a photo with your chosen object on-site. With over 40,000 items in the Museum’s collection — from functional everyday objects to iconic branded goods and quirky no-name designs — you’re bound to find something that speaks to you. The diversity ensures the search for your perfect “thing” is intriguing. While I’m still mourning the loss of that crocodile-shoe salt shaker, I’m confident I’ll discover an even better treasure to care for.
