RECAP: AYDOO SESSIONS LAUNCH

RECAP: AYDOO SESSIONS LAUNCH

We saw so many of your friendly faces last Friday at the Aydoo sessions launch event, and want to say thank you to everyone who came out! The new brand platform for hand-selected workshops in and around berlin is designed to help you make the most of your downtime with a variety of hands-on workshops, from a weekend session in the Uckermark to mixing up your own personalized fragrance. The launch event introduced you to the workshop topics with surreal cutouts dancing on the ceiling as drinks were sipped with a smile thanks to Manuteefaktur, Pilsner Urquell, Aqua Monaco and Fountain of Youth. Find yourself in photos from the event on Facebook and watch this recap video. Follow Aydoo sessions on Instagram to see what workshops are coming next, like Chocolate Artwork on 18.8.17 with Kristiane Kegelmann where participants will create elegant, and sweet, mini-chocolate masterpieces. THE LIFE’S WORK OF A BRAZILIAN MODERNIST: ROBERTO BURLE MARX

THE LIFE’S WORK OF A BRAZILIAN MODERNIST: ROBERTO BURLE MARX

I’m a landscape architect, which can often lead to confusion and many questions when explaining to someone what I actually do. Now, I’ve come to always ask this question in response: “Do you know the Copacabana?” Designed by Brazil’s Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994), one of the most influential landscape architects of the 20th century, Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana consists of different public gardens, beaches and parks and is one of his most well-known works. In addition to designing grand landscapes, he was also a painter, sculptor, textile designer, and ceramicist. With his close friend, Oscar Niemeyer — another famous architect of Brazilian modernism – he also designed the garden of the National Theater in Brasilia, among other things. “Brazilian Modernist” at Deutsche Bank KunstHalle illuminates his life’s work and demonstrates, on the basis of his projects, the variety and importance of the design and our perception of outdoor spaces. OKAY CAFÉ: BRINGING A TOUCH OF STOCKHOLM TO NEUKÖLLN

OKAY CAFÉ: BRINGING A TOUCH OF STOCKHOLM TO NEUKÖLLN

Whether you’re a Swede seeking a little taste of home or a Berliner simply craving a smile and something sweet — turn to Okay Café. Owner, head baker and chef, Marie-Louise (Makki) Crona has dabbled in the Berlin food scene over the past few years, with a host of projects from selling buns-by-bike, writing a food blog and hosting a series of Swedish-ish pop-ups. Now, she’s here to stay with her approachable brick-and-mortar café in Neukölln. In just over a year, Okay has become a favorite neighborhood hangout and a hub for Swedish holiday celebrations. From not too sweet cinnamon buns to avocado toast made with The Bread Station sourdough, satisfying omelets, and, on weekends, a sweet and savory assortment of tiny Swedish “plättar”, Makki’s food is as tasty to eat as it is to admire. Pair that with the friendly service and we’ve just found your new favorite café in Berlin. (Text: Devan Grimsrud / Photos: Luke Marshall Johnson)

ODE TO FRIENDSHIP: ARI BENJAMIN MEYERS AT ESTHER SCHIPPER

ODE TO FRIENDSHIP: ARI BENJAMIN MEYERS AT ESTHER SCHIPPER

At the start of this year, the violinist Ayumi Paul began writing letters to the artist and composer, Art Benjamin Meyers. Forgoing small talk in her writing, Paul instead shares intimate details from her childhood, telling of love, loss and her experiences of therapy. Meyers answered these letters in his own way, writing a score and translating Paul’s words into notes — thereby creating a sensitive portrait of his longtime friend. In Esther Schipper’s gallery you can now listen to Paul’s interpretation of Meyers’ compositions performed on the violin. Hanging on the walls are the letters, which Meyers has annotated with notes and memories. The duo’s friendship is experienced as a sound space in which music, words and objects each have their own role to play.
