TACO VS KIMCHI – KOREAN MEXICAN FUSION FOOD

What is a Korean taco you might ask? Well I’m not sure either, but I definitely want to try them when chef Raul Oliver Arriaga from Chaparro and Fräulein Kimchi mix up the ingredients from their home countries for a “Korean Taco Weekend” in Kreuzberg. Born in Seoul and raised in various cities in the US, Fräulein Kimchi has been experimenting with cooking since early age and continues to do so in Berlin; she caters private events and holds Korean cooking classes. The menu sounds promising – Korean tacos, Kimchi quesadillas, chocolate chili cake, soju margarita and an assortment of salsas and guacamole using both Korean and Mexican spices and ingredients. There is no need to reserve a table as it’s going to be very casual in true taqueria style. Weather permitting they will set up tables on the sidewalk too.

OPENING EVENT – PLATOON’S NEW KUNSTHALLE

You probably have noticed them strolling down Alte Schönhauser – the green cargo containers set along the street by Platoon. Now they’ve become really impossible to miss since there are 34 of them on a 4500m2 property. The communication agency Platoon, founded 13 years back, opened up its Berlin Kunsthalle and tonight is the opening event. It’s the second Kunsthalle; the first is located in Seoul. The Berlin version is meant to question the term “Kunsthalle” (art gallery) and discuss questions such as “art & culture as a brand”. For the following two years select guest curators will showcase creative projects you won’t normally find in common art spaces. Lectures, workshops and much more will complete the program.

JUDITH PELLER RECOMMENDS: STERLING GOLD

Located in between the old Postfuhramt and the new Synagogue on Oranienburger Strasse are the Heckmann Höfe, home of the sophisticated and lovely vintage shop “Sterling Gold” since 1999; the path to the store already makes you feel like traveling in time. You not only find yourself a fancy dress but you buy a story here. An emotion. When I visited the store for the first time I was taken right away by its special atmosphere. There are unique 50’s to 80’s dresses – hand-made, in bright colors and finest fabrics; your fingers and body, familiarized to H&M quality, will have to get used to them first. Every dress is unique. Found and collected in the USA, revamped with attention to detail, ironed out and, if necessary, made-to-measure by the shop’s own tailor, Madame Wittig. This is a store for those looking for a one-of-a-kind dress, may it be for prom, a night at the opera or your sister’s wedding.

LAUNCH PARTY – “ALBUM” CELEBRATES THE THIRD ISSUE

The headquarters of photography magazine “Album” is in Offenbach – but to properly celebrate the release of their third issue, the crew is coming to Berlin. Although this latest issue is called “The White Album”, they want to throw an open air party instead of simply mingling inside a white cube. Directly behind the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum, you’ll find beer and BBQ as well as music by Bertrand de Shark­ler and Kom­mando Otl Aicher. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for sunshine! In case you can’t make it to the opening, you can find the magazine at Motto, Bücherbogen and others (see list) or order it online at Album’s web shop – first two issues are still in stock.

OPERA NIGHT AT RENATE – DIDO & ANEAS IN THE GARDEN

If you’re in the mood for a night at the opera AND some partying, this event was made for you – Kiez Oper, Vignette Productions and Berlin’s legendary party team “Salon Zur wilden Renate” are hosting a special event this Friday and Saturday. The garden of the Salon will be converted into a stage for the contemporary one hour version of Henry Purcell’s baroque opera “Dido & Aneas”. Staged by the British director Andy Staples with a full baroque ensemble led by Benjamin Bayl, the piece is full of unexpected moves and twists… Later you are invited to the after-party at the club. Tickets can be purchased online or at the venue before the show.
