BERLINS BIGGEST SAND MINE

BERLINS BIGGEST SAND MINE

If you’re looking for an alternative to the usual excursions to the Berlin lakes, I can recommend the the abandoned sand deposit (“Sandgrube”) in Grunewald. It’s a former sand mine, vast and 25 meters deep in the middle of the forest. A bizarre yet perfect location to escape the city and relax. It’s a little like being at the beach, albeit the missing sea. In case it gets too hot down there: you can dip your toes in the pond located at the bottom of the pit where kids can play for hours, or simply keep on walking 10 more minutes to the Teufelssee.
