WALK THE LINE: BAUMKRONENPFAD BEELITZ

WALK THE LINE: BAUMKRONENPFAD BEELITZ

A golden fall can be more picturesque than the nicest summer’s day. The sun is yellow, the sky blue, and nature’s color palette transcends from yellow to green to brown. It’s these kind of days where leaving Berlin and going west is a good idea, past Potsdam, to Beelitz. Amidst ruins, a 40-meter tall tower stands, boasting views of the Berlin television tower from its viewing platform. Around 20 meters below, the newly-built Baumkronenpfad is a walkway across the treetops, leading past villas halfway overgrown by nature. Signs with plant descriptions mark the way, while the mind trails off to imagine what this place might have once looked like. Steeped in history, Beelitz was built in 1898 as the grounds of a military hospital used during the first and second World Wars. Today, visitors benefit from endless views of golden autumn ground, breathing in crisp air that still has something of a healing quality to it. (Text: Verena Schwarz)

GRETA RUMMEL RECOMMENDS: BODY ACTIVATION

GRETA RUMMEL RECOMMENDS: BODY ACTIVATION

Just when you thought your only choices outside of the gym for stretching and strength training were yoga and Pilates, comes the highly effective healing fitness program, Body Activation. Created by longtime New York City dance professional, Michele Kadison, Body Activation is taking Berlin by storm with exercises that open the body to greater flexibility, create more space in the spine and hips, reduce tension through natural spiraling movements, and help you develop a powerful and graceful core. Designed for men and women who sit too long, crane their necks over their smartphones, and who are generally out of touch with their body’s natural ability to move, Body Activation yields immediate results. Just ask Michele’s many students who range in age, weight, and physical ability! Whether it’s at the in-studio classes, private locations, or corporate workshops, Body Activation is rightfully hailed as the go-to technique for contemporary culture. (Text: Greta Rummel)

YOUR SPACE — YOGA, MEDITATION, AND MORE

YOUR SPACE — YOGA, MEDITATION, AND MORE

They still exist — those abandoned places transporting you straight back to the Berlin of the early 90s. Your Space, located in the backyard of an old factory is such a place. It is peaceful and it smells of dust, concrete and paint — time has stopped here and that is a good thing. Your Space is — as the name suggests — YOUR space. More than teaching yoga and meditation, the emphasis is on creating room for mindful creativity, inspiration, and on sharing knowledge with like-minded individuals. Classes in yoga, meditation, and kundalini are taught in a spacious concrete-floor studio, equipped with a set of 30 cacti and huge windows. Rotating programs on mindfulness take place here — boosting both body and soul. Berlin air and New York spirit combine — Your Space is spiritual but not esoteric. Welcome to the neighborhood, you cheery little studio. (Text: Olga Schlosser)

TIM KRAEHNKE RECOMMENDS: DISCGOLF IN BRANDENBURG

TIM KRAEHNKE RECOMMENDS: DISCGOLF IN BRANDENBURG

Discgolf, the American sport that’s been around for 50 years, has been gaining traction on our side of the pond. As the name suggests, the discgolf player throws a disc from a marked spot, similar to that in golf, though aiming for a basket. Because playing grounds are typically in parks, the player has to get around nature’s obstacles: trees, lakes, hills, and other hitches. Around Berlin, several courses have set up shop, for instance in public parks in Potsdam and Eberswalde, making it a great way to get out into the crisp autumn air with friends. Unlike frisbee discs, discgolf discs are smaller, denser, and heavier, though they can be thrown across a distance of 150 meters. Different “flight characteristics” require different discs: the driver (for distance), the midrange, and the putter. Most courses will provide information and hiring options, though the growing range of materials and patterns makes the buying and collecting all the more fun. (Text: Tim Kraehnke / Photos: Julia Michaelsen)
