SOPHIE HEYWOOD RECOMMENDS: ADIDAS RUNBASE FOR SOCIAL FITNESS

SOPHIE HEYWOOD RECOMMENDS: ADIDAS RUNBASE FOR SOCIAL FITNESS

When I arrived in Berlin, my first thought was to find a regular workout crew in the city. At Runbase Berlin I found it. Here you’ll find a mix of cardio and strength workouts, group runs and lower intensity yoga and Pilates classes. The indoor studios, outside training space, running trails, locker room, showers and the Lab Kitchen in-house cafe mean everything is under one roof. I love the total resistance exercise (trx) classes with Kaya and Dani. Some are high intensity while others are more strength-based – both leave me feeling sore but strong. Often the same people come to sessions, so you quickly feel part of the group. My favourite time to go is in summer for outdoor training: there’s nothing like having a healthy lunch from the Lab Kitchen in the sun post workout before swinging by the canal for a day party. Special workshops and events are held on weekends for those curious to go deeper with training. The next time you’re feeling unmotivated, head to Runbase Berlin to soak up the community vibes and feel the burn in class. (Text: Sophie Heywood / Photos: Runbase Berlin)

CHANYU XU RECOMMENDS: DINNER DIRECT FROM THE GARDEN AT CAFÉ BOTANICO

CHANYU XU RECOMMENDS: DINNER DIRECT FROM THE GARDEN AT CAFÉ BOTANICO

I discovered Café Botanico last summer when strolling around Neukölln. As with anything great in Berlin, the outside frontage of the cafe doesn’t look like anything special. But inside lies a 1000 sq. m magical wild garden where herbs, fruits and vegetables are grown and a beautiful cafe which cooks up the ingredients into homemade, Italian-inspired plates. The garden there is said to be the only one in the city with an organic certification. With over 200 edible plants, there’s plenty of room for creativity in the kitchen. Dishes change with the seasons and are mostly plant-based, vegetarian or vegan. The fresh pasta with wild herb salad is one of the best meals I’ve had in Berlin. Guided tours of the garden can be arranged too, if you want to deepen your botanical knowledge. When you visit, make sure to drop in on the bee colonies which feed on the flowering herbs. Their mild and sweet honey is used in the kitchen and is available to buy in the cafe. Sustainable, seasonal and local food doesn’t get much better than this. MARWAN FAKHEREDDIN RECOMMENDS: KHAO TAAN FOR FRESH, FAMILY-STYLE THAI FOOD

MARWAN FAKHEREDDIN RECOMMENDS: KHAO TAAN FOR FRESH, FAMILY-STYLE THAI FOOD

Berlin’s food culture has been given new nourishment by Khao Taan, an authentic Thai restaurant that opened in February 2019. Nestled in a quiet street in Friedrichshain, it resembles a dining room and your experience there is akin to a laid-back dinner with a Thai grandmother. After several stints at food markets like Bite club and Markthalle Neun, Gaan, a lawyer turned cook, decided to open up his own restaurant. The concept is based on successive courses, including dishes you select from categories including canapés and relishes. Each guest takes samples from plates and no one gets their own individual portion; everything is shared. Don’t expect to see Pad Thai on the menu, rather be ready for novel items such as guinea fowl, young green chilli and Chinese plum. Expect succulent flavours that will dazzle you while you converse with friends and family over hand-picked wine. Khao Taan merges contrasting flavours that turn complementary, and implements distinct textures that stimulate your taste buds, showcasing the extent of Thai cuisine. The abundance of love is evident, and with Gaan’s family style offering, you are guaranteed a complete culinary journey. (Text: Marwan Fakhereddin / Photos: Khao Taan)

HELEN AMIRI RECOMMENDS: CHUPAROSA BY KEMP GADEGAARD

HELEN AMIRI RECOMMENDS: CHUPAROSA BY KEMP GADEGAARD

The first time I wore a Kemp Gadegaard dress was in early 2017, just months after their official launch. Ever since, it has been my go-to brand for sleek and minimal design. Kemp Gadegaard is a Berlin design studio founded by Maya B. Gadegaard and Eilis Kemp focused on functional and beautiful garments. They produce small, limited editions at their atelier in Spain, weaving environmental and socially responsible production into the core. Their latest collection, Chuparosa, will be launched with a four-day presentation starting 25.04.2019 at the Weserhalle. Collaborator and ceramicist Lucy Olivia Ambrosecchiahas hand-crafted unique pieces for this presentation as an homage to the desert, to sand and to vast open spaces. If you love clean design with attention to detail that doesn’t compromise on quality, you’ve found your home. They will also be serving up desert tunes and crisp drinks to go with their stunning pieces. (Text: Helen Amiri / Photos: Kemp Gadegaard)

CECILE VADAS RECOMMENDS: LOSE YOURSELF IN THE BAROQUE GARDENS OF GUTSPARK BRITZ

CECILE VADAS RECOMMENDS: LOSE YOURSELF IN THE BAROQUE GARDENS OF GUTSPARK BRITZ

We all know about the Britzer Gardens, but have you ever heard of Gutspark Britz? Let me show you the traditional Baroque style garden and it’s little oasis that requires nothing more than family and friends for a free Easter weekend activity. The Gutspark was built initially as a flower garden in the traditional Baroque style. It’s home to Germany’s first Robina tree and still remains a monumental attraction today. To entertain family, friends and those energetic kids, look no further than the park’s farm yard. Home to a selection of animals including horses, black sheep, goats, cows, chickens and geese, there’s practically a small zoo waiting for you. The best part of the park? Picking up the slightly tattered brushes hanging from the black sheep’s enclosure fence. The sheep go crazy when you rub their backs and brush their heavily knotted coats. The park’s history goes back to the 1600s, as does the manor house’s. There is certainly a lot awaiting you at the park, only 10 minutes from Hermannstraße.
