THE BEST OF THE OLD AND THE NEWEST OF THE NEW — ANDREAS MURKUDIS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

THE BEST OF THE OLD AND THE NEWEST OF THE NEW — ANDREAS MURKUDIS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

It’s Andreas Murkudis’s birthday – or rather that of his universe. Murkudis opened his first shop, back then still in Mitte, 20 years ago (yes, it really has been two decades!). For almost as long, he has been at the forefront of Berlin’s fashion and art scene and his name has become synonymous with quality and international flair – something hard to find in the city even today. There are three shops on Potsdamer Straße, each named after its house number: 77, 81 and 98. The most famous – Store 81 – is located in the backyard of the Mercator Höfe, surrounded by galleries in the rooms of the former Tagesspiegel print press. This space and two other premises in the immediate vicinity are to host various events over the next few days to mark the anniversary of a name known for design, fashion and art.

Saturday (20.08.2022) sees a presentation of the world’s largest Helmut Lang vintage collection courtesy of Endyma, a fashion archive founded by collector Michael Kardamakis. The fit is perfect, and not just because of the late 90s aesthetic: like Murkudis, Lang’s work has always crossed boundaries as with his acclaimed collaboration with artist Jenny Holzer who, among other things, designed Lang’s stores. Incidentally: the exhibits aren’t just for looking at – they’re also for sale. Saturday is also the launch of the latest cooperation between Raf Simons and Kvadrat in the Store 77 furniture shop, as well as a new edition of the exhibition Das Haus with objects from designer duo e15. Events continue during Berlin Art Week (14–18.09), World Coastal Cleanup Day together with the Feuerle CollectionValerie Objects and others.
