ELLSWORTH KELLY’S GRAPHIC OUEVRE ON DISPLAY

ELLSWORTH KELLY’S GRAPHIC OUEVRE ON DISPLAY

Ellsworth Kelly’s sculpture, Berlin Totem, stands in the courtyard of the US embassy and his installation, Berlin Pannels 2000, adorns the western facade of the Paul-Löbe-Haus. But the three-dimensional works of Kelly, a representative of the Hard Edge genre, are just one small part of his immense oeuvre. Besides his totem pole-like sculptures, the artist, who passed away in December 2015, leaves behind an extensive body of graphical work, characterized by hard contours, abstract shapes, and intense colors. Tonight (8.9.2016), Lempertz, the oldest remaining family-owned art house, is holding a retrospective of Kelly’s work, showcasing select lithographs, serigraphs, and etchings from 1964 to 2000. It is only one part of Ellsworth Kelly’s legacy, but nonetheless, an impressive one. (Text: Stephanie Johne)
