THE FINISSAGE OF AVANT-GARDE FILMMAKER JAMES BENNING AT THE LICHTENBERGER FAHRBEREITSCHAFT

THE FINISSAGE OF AVANT-GARDE FILMMAKER JAMES BENNING AT THE LICHTENBERGER FAHRBEREITSCHAFT

In the city’s east, in the middle of the Lichtenberg industrial area, lies the Fahrbereitschaft. A unique mixture of small craft businesses, studios and trades on the former GDR vehicle fleet site. This area has been preserved and promoted since the Haubrok couple, who are art collectors, acquired it more than ten years ago to present their collection and hold exhibitions. This Saturday (22.06.2024), the current presentations “The Sky and Elsewhere” by avant-garde filmmaker and artist James Benning, and the group show “film” will come to an end, but not before a closing event. While the exhibitions can be viewed for the last time from 17h, Benning himself, who works with photography and painting as well as structural film, will appear at the finissage and take part in a panel discussion (in English) with installation artist Sam Durant, filmmaker Leslie Thornton, and Dennis Vetter, the co-founder and artistic director of the “Woche der Kritik” festival. The discussion will be followed by the inauguration of the new open-air cinema on the site with Benning’s film “Fresh Air” (how fitting). Snacks for the evening will be provided by the Austrian Kreuzbergers from Jolesch. And when the credits roll, the street food is finished, and the trip to Lichtenberg is over, you’ll be glad you didn’t miss it: this conceptually challenging and rewarding exhibition.
