Back for its twelfth edition, the A Maze festival (10–13.05.2023) is all about highlighting innovation and creativity in the arthouse video games world. Now you might be thinking: I’m not a gamer – and this is just for gamers, right? And, yes, while gamer girls and boys will absolutely be in their element at the festival, the program also offers lots of fun things for those of us who don’t know a low-poly exploration from a nonlinear platformer. The four-day event, hosted at the Betonhalle at Silent Green in Wedding, celebrates any and all kinds of “playful media”. There’s the Sound Effect Souffle, a presentation on sound design that is billed as a “chaotic way to cook up sounds”, and the Cool Cat Disco where VR avatars perform dances based on live body tracking. Meanwhile, writers of all backgrounds can experiment with using AI to develop ideas and make texts more creative at the AI & Words Workshop. Finally: not to be missed is the festival exhibition, which is located in the Betonhalle and includes interactive installations and play elements that blur the lines between art and gaming. So time to head to Wedding and get ready to play – or write or watch or listen…
