ART AS POETRY: ABSTRACT ENVIRONMENTS BY CARLA CHAN

The destructive relationship between nature and humans is the focus of Carla Chan’s latest solo exhibition. Opening tomorrow evening, “When the World is Left Only Black and Grey” combines installation and screen printing in exploration of the toxic beauty of humans’ degradation of nature. Working between Berlin and Hong Kong, Chan’s work traces human intervention in seemingly untouched settings. For this exhibition, she uses carbon black printed with acetone to reflect how nature is being affected by pollution. A custom-built magnetic mechanism behind the images moves the printed iron powder around the paper, thereby mimicking a landscape and the ambiguous relationship between creation and destruction.
