HYNER — MITTE SHOP FOR ELEGANT DESIGNS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

HYNER — MITTE SHOP FOR ELEGANT DESIGNS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

Hyner is a revelation. Located in the middle of Mitte’s Bergstraße where Pavlov’s dog gallery once stood, this small store is full of traditional handicrafts lovingly made with modern techniques, like ceramics made in an open fire and hand-woven blankets. Its founder, art historian Jana Hyner, opened the shop in November 2019 having spent a year traveling through Germany visiting craftsmen and -women and learning about their production methods. The result is a collection of products that combine quality craftsmanship, clear aesthetics and harmonious design. Almost too beautiful to simply serve food, Carolin Wachter’s hand-turned ceramics are made of French hard porcelain. Her workshop at the Glindow Ceramics and Cultural Estate in Werder, Brandenburg, offers studio visits by appointment. At Hyner, you’ll also find purist stoneware from ceramicists Kaas + Heger, who just received the Rhineland-Palatinate Design Award. Their plates, cups, oblong spoons and small bowls are multi-functional: the saucer, for instance, can also be used as a lid for the beautiful natural-colored jar.

Equally unique are the jugs and tumblers made from Thuringian Forest glass at Farbglashuette Lauscha and the sculptural clay mugs, vases, teapots and bowls by Pit Arens. The shop is great for gifts, too: handmade candles from Bavaria in vibrant neon colors, French soaps, photo prints and wooden toys. Then there’s the award-winning hand-woven wool blankets, manufactured in Luxembourg and designed by Meyers & Fügmann, a Berlin-based studio specializing in textile and product design. Hyner also carries the pair’s porcelain lampshades, “Duotone” vases and plates. You can easily spend an hour at the store appreciating the collection and its makers. As Jana says, “Every object reflects the work of two hands – each as individual as a person.”
