It’s already won the hearts of many Weddingers: Kiosk Sardelle, the little yellow and gray Kiez shop on Kiautschoustrasse that sells a well-chosen assortment of groceries and gifts. On top of that, it’s also a cafe serving coffee, cold drinks and even ice cream served in fruit shells! Owners Miriam and Lioba opened the space in February 2022 and offer around 120 products, most sourced from Southern Europe but also closer to home. Some actually come from Wedding, including the Kawa coffee, handmade sketchbooks from Sara Bellinghausen (Hand & Wort) and Caracciolo wine from a maker who lives just around the corner. My top five products? The Espinaler vermouth, the anchovies and olives from Spain, the mandarin chocolate from Italy, the Torres truffle chips from Spain and the Sola Fuet Espetec salami.
The abundance of Spanish products is down to the fact that Lioba and Miriam both lived in Barcelona, where I met Lioba in 2010. I remember our wild nights drinking homemade vermouth on the Rambla de Raval and meeting for breakfast bocadillos before heading to the beach. The duo’s shop sells bocadillos made with fresh bread from neighboring bakery Hansis Brot and offers wine and vermouth tasting. You can also pick up a picnic hamper filled with drinks and snacks and take it to the canal or to Plotzensee (a 15 minute walk away).
