The tiny canteen from the Volksbühne theater is a known secret to folks working around the Rosa Luxemburg area. When my friends first brought me here, I felt like we were trespassing. You enter from the stage door at the back of the building, pass the receptionist, proceed through the door on the left, cross the tiny dungeon-like back yard, enter the hallway in the far corner that leads downstairs, et voilà! Food is not much better then other canteens but the atmosphere definitely is! If you’re lucky you may sit next to fully dressed actors watching the TV screen streaming live stage, waiting for their part as they eat heavy German food. Last but not least, the price is unbeatable in this area; expect huge portions for less then 4€!
