NADINE DINTER RECOMMENDS: SCHWARZES CAFÉ

NADINE DINTER RECOMMENDS: SCHWARZES CAFÉ

A flamboyant parrot lit by fluorescent lights sits in the window and a recessed pentagram crowns the doorstep; welcome to Schwarzes Café, the “black café”. This place is a relic of the old times, the former West Berlin. As a café that is open 24/7, it offers a unique flair to its various guests: high altbau ceilings, walls decorated with stucco, cozy furniture and its original red room. Whether you’re a student or a tourist, as a couple or with a group of friends, Schwarzes Café has been the perfect place for an early breakfast at 2AM or simply to work remotely – since 1978. The café au lait is still served in the traditional French bowl, the tables are covered with white tablecloths and and their blacklight-lit restroom has become legendary. Try the black tortellini filled with salmon in lobster sauce. (Photos: Carlito Schilirò)
