A vivid neon green sign illuminates the entrance to Odeon Kino, the neighborhood cinema with a cult following. In true American cinema style, the buttery scent of salted popcorn lingers in the foyer welcoming all inside – especially those who want to see films in their original language. The Schöneberg cinema has a strong following for just that reason: Odeon claims to be Berlin’s ‘pioneer of OV culture’ as the first cinema to show films in their original English version. Opened originally as ‘Sylvie’ in the 1950s, Odeon was taken over by Yorck Kinogruppe — Berlin’s largest cinema association — in the 80s and has retained its stellar reputation ever since. With just one hall of close to 400 comfy red seats, Odeon Kino feels like a step back in time and is well worth a visit the next time you want to see an English movie.
