PÉTANQUE PICNIC, FREE SOFT SERVE, AFRICAN BOOK FESTIVAL & ART — FOUR EVENTS FOR THIS WEEKEND’S CALENDAR

PÉTANQUE PICNIC, FREE SOFT SERVE, AFRICAN BOOK FESTIVAL & ART — FOUR EVENTS FOR THIS WEEKEND’S CALENDAR

Doesn’t summer just fly by? With the longest day behind us it won’t be long before the season peak is in the rear view mirror. All the more reason, we say, to cram in the fun with four events on one weekend! First up: Pétanque Picnic from fellow newsletter creators Mitte Daily. Whether you’re a petanque pro or are more likely to use a boule as a giant paperweight, you’ll be welcome all the same for bowling and snacking at Gipsdreieck park this Saturday (29.06.2024, 16h). Sign up via DM, and don’t forget to BYOB + food. Meanwhile, if the weather tells you to stay indoors, the African Book Festival (28.–30.06.) at Alte Münze has you covered. Back this year with a special LGBTQ+ edition, the three-day program is too packed to detail here, but one highlight worth checking out is “Love At First Read”, a literary speed dating session where you meet authors and find your perfect book match. Also worth a look is the performance “I’m a Homosexual, Mum” by Nigerian human rights activist and actor Bisi Alimi and Kenyan author and podcaster Kevin Mwachiro.

To top off the weekend is another event that’s all about creativity: Echoes of promised safety. This art-meets-fashion “performance” will see Berlin-based artist Elodie Carstensen create 12 of her ice-dyed silk garments to live sounds by 12 music makers at the Großer Wasserspeicher in Prenzlauer Berg. It’s being held as part of Fashion Week over the course of 48 hours starting Sunday (30.06–01.07, 16–22h). And if you need to cool off at the weekend from all the event hopping, you should definitely join Grotto, who will serve free vanilla soft ice on Saturday (29.06.) for twenty-four hours (00h–24h) as part of this year’s Project Space Festival. Every hour, a different artist will serve you, with special performances every six hours. The soft serve is vegan of course, and you can eat as much as you desire! Sunshine fun, literary get-togethers and artistic happenings – this weekend’s calendar is set to be a full one…
