GARDENING PODCASTS — FOUR SHOWS FOR SOWING, GROWING AND HARVESTING YOUR OWN PLANTS

As the gardens and balconies of Berlin finally begin to bloom, we’ve gathered four gardening podcasts that will help you get your herbs, flowers and veggies in tip-top shape. First up is Garten: Alles Möhre, oder was?!, the fortnightly gardening podcast from NDR 1 Niedersachsen radio that offers expert advice on everything from sowing seeds correctly to creating an ideal habitat for insects. If you don’t have a garden, the latest episode on planting balcony gardens features advice on which species will thrive best in your space. Moving inside, On the Ledge is the houseplant podcast from keen gardener Jane Perrone, who offers guidance on every aspect of growing and maintaining indoor flora. The weekly episodes bring together horticultural experts from around the world who share tips on subjects like natural pest control and how to keep citrus plants happy.

Gardening isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s also a satisfying source of food. Enter Sauercrowded, the fortnightly show hosted by allotment gardener Jule and kitchen whizz Célia that is packed with insights on how to grow, prepare and preserve your own vegetables and herbs. The pair share gardening techniques for getting the best greens – from radishes to lettuce – plus recipe ideas for making the most of your harvest. May is the perfect time for planting herbs, so check out the latest episode featuring the best species for garnishes and herbal tees. Next, behind every plant is a person who sowed the seed and that’s where Humans Growing Stuff comes in. Hosted by New Yorker Mangesh Hattikudur, the show tells the stories of the people behind the plants, whether it’s activist growers who are tackling the problem of food deserts through gardening or the modern men whose flower-tending skills are redefining masculinity. Finally, gardening meets culture in Episode 23 of the Grisebach arts podcast Die Sucht zu Sehen. In it, writer Jakob Augstein shares his thoughts on the meditative effect of gardening, which was the subject of his 2012 book Die Tage des Gärtners (“The Days of the Gardener”). Time to get your headphones on and your gardening gloves ready…
