POLITURA: MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE FROM POLAND

Most Berlin stores carrying mid-century modern furniture are specialized in Scandinavian classics, but Politura in Schillerkiez is different. It’s all about design from Poland here. The little store in Berlin is run by Michael Szarko while his partner Przybyrad Paszyn is based in Poznań. Together they hunt for great pieces – mostly sofas, armchairs or chairs, but you’ll find a little selection of sideboards and objects too. All pieces are carefully restored in Poland. As an added bonus, they offer a special service too: refurbishing your furniture. The idea behind Politura is to show, despite mass production by the VEB (nationally owned enterprises), that great designs did exist behind the Iron Curtain. And behind the numbers that were given to the furniture, were renowned designers like Rajmund Teofil Hałas, Teresa Kruszewska and Maria Chomentowska. Politura not only brings used objects back to life but belated fame to talented designers as well. (Text: Nina Trippel / photos: Politura)
