June kicks off the summer season: loud, fun and inexpensive. It starts on Thursday (05.06.2025) with Spätschicht x Pop-Kultur Festival. The new series of events invites you to a colorful live program in the Gropiusbau. What Yoko Ono wrote down in “Grapefruit” between 1953 and 1964 is expressed in the performances of the Robert class. The sculpture and performance class at the UdK explores how the power of imagination can move collective action, with the group reacting to the artist’s instructions in spoken or physical interactions. If that’s not enough, you might be tempted by a round of Queer Ping Pong, the live concert by Wa22ermann, or what Meg10 does on the turntables. In Neukölln, you can accompany photographer Michael Josè on a very personal journey. Having grown up in Denmark with adoptive parents, the Danish-Colombian artist meets the local Colombian community for the first time in Berlin. Josè sets off in search of his earliest past and documents his journey photographically in Motherland: a story about gaining a new part of the self, for which author Milly Bouroughs has found the words. On Friday (06.06.) visit Josè’s book release and the start of the three-day exhibition at Backhaus Projects. There will also be wine from Vinhanen Engros. Another book, titled Vibraception, tells of the power of vibration to shape spaces. It accompanies the sound interventions by sound artist Jan St. Werner, which can be heard this Sunday (08.06.) as a performance and book presentation at the Haubrok Foundation. For those who prefer music in the open air, on Sunday (08.06.), for once, we are not going to Kreuzberg — the Carnival of Cultures is celebrating in Friedrichshain. If you skipped the parade in recent years and need a change of scenery, watch the colorful parade along Frankfurter or Karl-Marx-Allee. It’s also worth taking a look next week at the annual exhibition 100 Beste Plakate 24 at the Kulturforum. The opening on Thursday (12.06.) will include a welcome speech from the presidents of 100 Beste Plakate e.V., Susanne Stahland Fons Hickmann, the launch of the yearbook and, of course, the strongest poster designs of 2024 from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Admission is free. Other exciting events such as designer-guided tours, a retrospective of 2000s posters, and a panel discussion with the presidents will follow over the month. When art, culture and design beckon you, it’s best to just go along.
