SIRPLUS: STOCKING UP AT THE SUPERMARKET THAT SAVES FOOD

SIRPLUS: STOCKING UP AT THE SUPERMARKET THAT SAVES FOOD

In Germany, 18 million tons of food are wasted every year, amounting to one truckload per minute. If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest CO2 producer in the world after China and the USA. If you are frustrated by food waste and want to improve your own habits, then we have a suggestion: Become a food saver with Sirplus. Founded in 2017, the Berlin-based initiative is committed to combating food waste by working with wholesalers, supermarkets and farmers to collect and re-distribute excess and expired food products, available in subscription-based “Retterboxes”, online or in one of their Sirplus stores. The stores are just like normal supermarkets – selling everything from apples to cinnamon buns – except the products are collected on a weekly basis from expired and surplus stock (and inspected for edibility, of course). If shopping there doesn’t help your conscience, there is also a crowdfunding campaign running until 27.06.19 to better fund storage and logistic capabilities and to develop Sirplus’s franchise concept. Sounds like a great opportunity to do some good, doesn’t it? (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Sirplus)
